WRITING GUIDELINES
Types of Contributions
Bakka Magazine welcomes essays, stories, satire or parody, columns, and reviews in English or Lao on a variety of topics, especially if the works have a Laotian angle. Artworks and cartoon sketches suitable for web posting are also welcomed.
Style and Grammar
Please submit articles in Microsoft Word 2000 for Mac or Microsoft Word 2000/up for Windows. Use single spaced Verdana font, 12-point size throughout the submission. For Lao, use Saysettha OT. Save your article as plain text. You may use bold and italic text, but no underlines. Use real (i.e. “Laos"), quotes and apostrophes throughout, except when indicating distance in feet or inches. Use only a single-space character after each sentence, a single carriage return after each paragraph, and a single tab at the beginning line of each paragraph. All text should be left aligned, without justification or hyphenation. Do not embed graphics. Instead, include as separate JPEG or GIF. Do not use headers, footers, or page numbers. Before submitting, spell check and correct the entire submission, and indicate the number of words at the beginning of the file. If you send an update to a previous submission, please use revision numbers (e.g. rev 1.1). Use American English spelling. Use the Library of Congress and American Library Association for English transliteration of Laotian words into English, http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html.
Graphics and Digital Photographs
Bakka Magazine welcomes graphics and digital photographs as part of submissions. With digital photographs, we assume that the author owns the right to have the digital photograph reproduced. We assume the graphics to have been prepared by the author. Graphics must be submitted in GIF and photographs, in JPG (JPEG) with 72 dpi screen resolution.
Biography/Byline
Writers and authors may include an up-to-date writer’s blurb at the end of their submission. The blurb should contain the author’s background and qualifications, and a way to contact him or her. Blurbs should not contain advertisement for the author’s ventures.
Deadline
Articles are due the first Monday of every month or earlier.
